Match #12: NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair vs. Sting
Collar and elbow tie up and Sting holds a side headlock. Football tackle from Sting who then reverses a hip toss into one of his own. Flair regroups on the floor. The two have a “woo-off” with the crowd before locking up again. Flair holds a hammerlock but Sting reverses it into a drop toe hold. Sting holds Flair on the mat before coming back to their feet with an arm bar. Flair lifts Sting to the top turn buckle before a clean break. Slowly back to the middle of the ring and they tie up again. Flair works Sting down temporarily but Sting strengths him over. Flair breaks the hold on the ropes. Collar and elbow tie up and Flair holds a side headlock. Football tackle by Flair.
They leapfrog one another before Sting drops Flair with a gorilla press slam. Flair gets into a shoving match before pacing the floor. Flair re-enters the ring and they tie up again. Shoulder tackle by Sting, who then reverses a hiptoss into a backslide for 2. Flair chops Sting to the mat. He pulls Sting up for more chops but cannot hip toss him. Sting tosses him instead and hits several drop kicks. Several football tackles from Sting and he can only get a 2 count. Flair lures Sting in and kicks him to the mid section before sending him outside.
More vicious chops from Flair and Sting is sent into the railing. Back in the ring, Flair sends Sting’s neck over the top rope. He brings Sting back in with a standing vertical suplex and gets a 2 count. Flair drops his trademarked knee on Sting’s skull and gives the crowd a “Wooo”! Another chop from Flair and he cradles Sting from an abdominal stretch. He only gets a 2 count and Flair yells at the referee. Small package from Flair but it’s another 2 count. Flair picks up Sting for a standing vertical suplex but Sting kicks out once again. Irish whip to the corner and Sting drops to his knees. Another Irish whip and Sting is reeling.
Flair hooks both arms for a suplex and gets another 2 count. Flair sends him for another Irish whip but Sting comes off the turnbuckle with a clothesline. Flair rolls out of the ring and Sting gives chase. Flair tries to chop him, but Sting will have none of it. Flair rolls in the ring and tries to cheap shot him on the apron. Sting attempts a sunset flip but Flair breaks it up with a straight right hand. Flair looks to suplex Sting out to the floor but it’s reversed and Sting gets a 2 count. More frivolous chops from Flair and the crowd cheers for Stinger.

Flair holds Sting’s leg up for the figure four, but Sting grabs Flair’s head and rolls him up in a small package for the win.
Winner: Sting (Small Package/20 Points)
- After The Bell: The Andersons rush the ring, but ultimately, The Horsemen show respect and shake Sting’s hand.
- EA’s Take: Not quite a classic between these two, but not too shabby either. Since Flair was currently over as a babyface and facing the biggest fan favorite in the company, I couldn’t tell if some of his heel behavior was situationalbased on his opponent or if there was a turn coming. They certainly teased it and trust me, it’s coming, but we’re not there yet.
EA’s Finisher: If you just like some straight ‘wrastlin’ then this PPV is for you. No backstage promos, very few elaborate entrances and it was pretty condensed in terms of in-ring talent. I liked that there were no lousy gimmick matches. I mean, technically the point system is a gimmick, but at the end of the day, we’re talking about strictly straight matches here. One match followed the other almost immediately so there was no shortage of action. As tacky or dated as it may be by today’s standards, I actually really enjoyed the staging. You’re not going to see many Starrcades or WrestleManias where zero titles are on the line and frankly, a third of your roster is just trying to figure it out. The concept though? That needs work, as I found it to be very confusing.

Attitude Of Aggression #345- The Big Five Project: Survivor Series ’96
The Big Five Project returns as we cover Survivor Series’96, including Austin vs The Hitman and Sycho Sid capturing the WWE Championship!
The Big Five Project returns as we bring 1996 to an epic conclusion. Before we get there, though, Rey Cash joins Dave and PC Tunney to take a look at the full card for WrestleMania 42, coming up in just a few days. What matches are we excited about, and what are we unsure of? From there, it is on to Survivor Series ’96. The final PPV of 1996 delivered on many fronts. Emanating from Madison Square Garden, this event stood on the precipice of the emergence of the Attitude Era, and the crowd in New York City truly let Vince McMahon know what was working and what was not. On this memorable night, we saw Undertaker and Mankind end their storied rivalry, for a little while anyway. On the other hand, Bret “The Hitman” Hart and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin were just beginning their rivalry. Speaking of beginnings, Survivor Series ’96 saw the debut of an electrifying future champion and icon in Rocky Maivia, the man we would all come to know as The Rock in just a couple of years. In the Main Event, though, the NYC crowd would memorably turn against the WWF Champion, Shawn Michaels, and align themselves with Sycho Sid, and history was made. The Attitude Era is nearly here, and Survivor Series’ 96 caught a lot of what would make the next few years in WWE, in the eyes of many, the greatest in the history of the industry! Are you ready for a wild ride? Tune in for this latest installment of the Big Five Project!

Chris King’s What If: Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens At WrestleMania 33
Imagining a world where Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens’ battle at WWE WrestleMania 33 was for the Universal Championship.
Imagining a world where Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens’ battle at WWE WrestleMania 33 was for the Universal Championship.
At WrestleMania 33, Goldberg defended the Universal Championship against Brock Lesnar. Everyone, myself included, was not thrilled that two part-timers were fighting over the heavyweight title, and instead it should have been Kevin Owens defending against Chris Jericho.
KO and Jericho were the hottest duo in 2016. What started off as a random tag team pairing quickly turned into solid gold. Both superstars had a ton of chemistry together, so when KO became universal champion and Jericho was side by side with him, it worked. Jericho’s moniker at the time, “You Just Made The List,” and his amazing scarf collection were a highlight of Monday Night Raw.
KO and Jericho were the best of friends; Owens even helped his buddy win the United States Championship. Every time KO had a title defense, Jericho would cause some distraction or physically get involved to ensure Owens remained champion. At the 2017 Royal Rumble PLE, Jericho was held up in a shark cage hanging above the ring and still managed to try and help KO defeat Roman Reigns, but the WWE Universe had Braun Strowman to thank for that assist.
Gearing up to WrestleMania, Goldberg would push and prod his way into getting a championship match at Fastlane. Jericho would be the one to offer him a title match; in return, the duo would immediately break up. In the historic segment “Festival of Friendship,” Jericho would give his best friend a bunch of meaningful gifts, but KO had other plans. Owens would brutally attack Jericho and throw him into the TV screen.
Let’s be honest, Goldberg and Lesnar didn’t need the title to tell an important story. ‘The Beast Incarnate’ could have gotten his revenge after his humiliating loss to Goldberg at the 2016 Survivor Series in eighty-five seconds. The two part-timers could have had their match, and KO and Jericho, former best friends, could have had their storybook ending in a fantastic match.
We all know how Jericho got his revenge on KO, by costing him the universal championship at Fastlane. What if by some miracle, KO retained the title and Jericho still got his revenge? Both superstars would have delivered an in-ring classic match at Mania. Jericho himself has actually stated that being placed second on the card was one of the catalysts to him leaving WWE and venturing out to other wrestling companies. For the first time in his WWE career, Jericho could have been world champion as a babyface.
