Rob’s Most Overblown Stories of 2019
Sometimes a thing that hits a nerve gets turned into MAJOR OUTRAGE because that’s good for traffic; 2019 was no exception.
Last week it was the bad news, this time it’s the overrated news. As you all know wrestling media or as we call it Wrestling Newz is known for a lot of hyped up speculation, opinion treated as fact, and often flat out wrong stories. Sometimes a thing that hits a nerve gets turned into MAJOR OUTRAGE because that’s good for traffic; 2019 was no exception. And while some of you guys love that stuff, which these people’s traffic numbers suggests is definitely the case, the rest of us are perpetually annoyed by the mere sight of these stories. Here are the ones that I thought were the biggest examples of this kind of hyperbole:
5. Mad About the Wildcard Rule
Go back to about a month after WrestleMania. There was a steep, abrupt ratings dip between Monday nights, which a lot of people used to validate their already existing takes about WWE programming. And before long we had the Wildcard Rule, where three people from each brand would be able to work the other show on any given Monday or Tuesday. Now in hindsight this was something to put a floor on the ratings dip and stabilize things, and it worked. But that didn’t stop a weekly flood of ‘WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS????’ on social media and on the websites. For the life of me I never quite understood being so pissed off about maybe seeing some of your favorite people twice a week instead of once, and I never knew that so many people were invested in the sanctity of the brand split. (And we got a reminder of that this past Monday when a few of our intrepid reporters felt Deanna Purazzo getting to work a match on RAW was a bridge too far) It really wasn’t that serious, folks.
4. The WWE Creative Process
The shot heard around the wrestling world came when John Moxley (formerly Dean Ambrose) did a round of interviews after leaving WWE where took a personal dump all over the WWE’s creative process. (I had my own takes here and here.) Now there have countless stories over the years of how Vince has final say on everything, of people disagreeing with him about lots of things, and those last minute rewrites of entire shows but the strawman arguments about scripted promos and produced segments/matches got some rocket fuel attached to them after those interviews Jon did. Looking at the big picture, Jon wanted to do some things that just aren’t getting on WWE TV like death matches and extra profane promos and his frustration over that and the grind that is the WWE schedule are perfectly acceptable. But for people to take that and act like we were getting some kind of revelations on how the WWE works on the inside was just a bunch of exaggerated nonsense. We been knew! And to act as if his personal story was a reflection on how everyone feels there, when Jon himself said that was not the case, was as disingenuous as you can get.
3. Seth Rollins is the best
Seth started out the year on a roll – winning the Royal Rumble and beating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania – and then things got weird around June. He did an interview with Sports Illustrated where in the midst of WWE bashing on the internet he proclaimed his support for his employer as the best wrestling on the planet and himself as the best one doing it. Which is no different from what you’ll hear from the top champion in every wrestling company in the world, but because he said that about the perpetually maligned WWE it was somehow taken as a bridge too far and a sign that he’s a corporate shill. I mean come on folks, did y’all just start listening to wrestlers do interviews in 2019? I’m old enough to remember that even in the dying days of the AWA and WCW their guys would come out and say their place was the best. It’s not anything new or anything to get whipped into a frenzy about.
2. The Wrestling Boom
This one’s been simmering for a while. Between New Japan’s expansion, Ring of Honor’s record 2018, news of record revenues for WWE, new indie promotions popping up everywhere, All In, and then the start of AEW there was a lot of talk of there being a wrestling boom about to hit. But then reality hit. Crowd numbers have been below expectations all around, AEW’s numbers have been decent but not up to the hype, and professional wrestling hasn’t gotten any bigger in the mainstream than it was before. What it really looks like is that it’s easier to get into the business than ever before and thanks to streaming there’s a way to broadcast your shows so now everyone can get their stuff out there again for the first time in years. But that doesn’t mean the business as a whole is any more popular than it has been. At the end of the day it’s still a niche entertainment product that people can make good money off of in certain corners if things break right. And that’s fine! Stop trying to make it cool and just embrace that we like some weird stuff here.
And number one…..
1. The Wednesday Night Wars
I’ve talked about this already here. But to continue, the Wednesday Night Wars were hyped up in a lot of circles as the sequel to the famed Monday Night Wars and the thing that would shift the dynamic of wrestling on TV. And yet, they haven’t. NXT and AEW combined don’t pull in as many viewers as the third hour of Raw. Neither show is in danger of being cancelled but neither one is blowing the world away either. Raw is usually the highest rated show on basic cable when there’s no Monday Night Football; neither AEW Dynamite or NXT come close to that. Now is there good wrestling on both shows? Sure. But good, even great wrestling, does not equal big ratings or big money. The Wednesday Night Wars can essentially be boiled down to TNT wanting something, anything that could draw some kind of number and USA needing something to replace SmackDown. Now there is a separate mission for both shows – AEW needs some kind of money generator that isn’t ticket sales, merchandise or pay per view while NXT is there to keep AEW from getting big enough to get any real money for TV – but that’s a far cry from the NWO on one channel and Stone Cold on the other.
So that’s 2019 in hyperbole. I will have good news before the year’s over, I promise!

Chris King’s WWE Monday Night Raw Takeaways (May 18, 2026)

Chris King takes a look at a loaded edition of WWE Monday Night Raw from May 18, 2026!
This was an excellent episode of Monday Night Raw, right from the start to the end of the episode. So many interesting storyline developments, and The Beast Incarnate made his shocking return to take down Oba Femi, and Jacob Fatu challenged Roman Reigns to Tribal Combat at Clash in Italy! Here are my takeaways from this week’s episode of Raw.
Tribal Combat Is On!
In the first segment of this week’s edition of Monday Night Raw, Jimmy Uso tried to talk some sense into an unhinged Jacob Fatu. ‘The Right Hand Man,’ Jey Uso, on the other hand, with a steel chair in hand, made the mistake of trying to take out ‘The Samoan Werewolf.’ The Usos were getting their asses kicked until ‘The Tribal Chief’ Roman Reigns made his way into the fray. A triple-team attack from the OG Bloodline forced Fatu’s hand, and he challenged Roman to Tribal Combat!
- This feud has been exciting for the past month, and Fatu has been built up as an indestructible monster taking down The Bloodline. My only complaint is that Roman will retain his World Heavyweight Championship and his rival will be forced to acknowledge him and fall in line. Perhaps this could lead to the long-awaited debut of Zilla Fatu or possibly the return of The Final Boss.
Finn Bálor & JD McDonagh Make Magic
Finn Bálor and former friend turned enemy JD McDonagh faced off in a fun street fight. JD is such a great seller, and his moonsault is simply beautiful. He’s so talented, and I urge you to go back and watch his matches in NXT UK under his name, Jordan Devlin. Dominik Mysterio tried to interfere, but Balor thwarted a 619 attack. Balor was able to stamp his victory with a Coup De Grace through JD and a trash can.
- Finn and JD have insane chemistry together, whether as a team or as rivals. I think they need to add a stipulation for the next and hopefully final match between Dom and Finn. This feud needs to be over sooner rather than later, or all of Balor’s momentum will be lost. Perhaps Balor could move to SmackDown to face some fresh competition.
Sol Ruca & The Man Segment
The Man’ Becky Lynch interrupted the new Raw superstar’s promo. The antagonizing champion evaded a title match for Saturday Night Main Event only, to give Ruca a non-title match at this Saturday’s event.
- Becky Lynch plays such a great heel who belittles and berates her opponents. This segment was exactly what it needed to be. Short and straight to the point. The fact that the Women’s Intercontinental Champion is Ruca’s first feud on the main roster showed how much confidence the company has in her.
- Ruca needs to win this match, and she can then challenge for the title at Clash in Italy, and Lynch can cheat to retain it. I don’t see her winning the title until SummerSlam, though.
El Grande Americano Mix
El Grande Americano, Bravo, and Rayo vs. OG Americano, Julio, and Bruto in a six-man tag team match. All six Mexican superstars delivered a fantastic performance. El Grande utilized the metal plate to deliver a massive headbutt to secure the victory.
- Every time I watch these matches, it reminds me of the 90s Luchador style that I grew up watching. It’s always fun and fast-paced wrestling that blows me away. Some of the moves they deliver are so dangerous, but thankfully, nobody got hurt. On May 30th, El Grande will unmask the OG El Grande, and I’m assuming Chad Gable will make his long-awaited return to WWE.
Women’s Tag Team Championship Match: Paige and Brie Bella vs. Judgment Day
Paige and Bri Bella continued to prove to be a cohesive unit this week, taking on Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez. Liv Morgan tried to interfere but was ejected from ringside. Roxanne tried to hit Paige with the title belt, but it was avoided, and she rolled her up to successfully retain the titles.
- Brie Bella and Paige are working well as a makeshift tag team while Nikki Bella heals for her return. I see the writing on the wall for The Bella Twins to turn on Paige, and I think she’ll call AJ Lee to tag with her at SummerSlam. Right now, the women’s tag team championships are a central focus on both shows, and that’s always a great thing.
The Beast Is Back
We were all prepared for another Oba Femi open challenge when ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar shocked the world with his return to WWE. The Beast dropped Femi with four thunderous F5s and left him laid out in the wake of destruction. Following the attack, Paul Heyman gives Adam Pearce a contract for Clash in Italy with Lesnar’s signature already on it. We are getting Lesnar/Femi Part Two!
- For over a month, WWE has hinted at Lesnar’s retirement after leaving his boots and gloves in the ring at WrestleMania, but they never confirmed it either. I feel like it was his last match at Mania, before formally retiring at SummerSlam in his hometown of Minnesota.
- My only concern is that it feels like Femi will lose at Clash and then ultimately retire Lesnar at SummerSlam. I don’t know if that’s the smartest decision here. Time will tell.
Seth Rollins vs. Austin Theory
In his first match on Raw in over nine months, ‘The Visionary’ Seth Rollins looked great against The Vision’s Austin Theory. Rollins had to fight off Logan Paul, who tried to interfere to give his tag team partner the win. A determined Rollins outlasted the shenanigans and delivered a Pedigree to ensure the victory. Immediately, he was pummeled by Paul, and Bron Breakker quickly entered the ring.
Rollins was no match for The Vision until Angelo Dawkins came out to help. Montez Ford was pissed that Dawkins ate a spear on Rollins’ behalf. It didn’t matter though, and Ford would also fall victim to a thunderous spear! Breakker would not stop his assault on Rollins as security broke things up to end the show.
- WWE was smart not to give us Breakker vs. Rollins on free television. I was very surprised to see how well Rollins and Theory gel together as opponents. Theory is insanely talented, and he needs to win a singles championship sometime soon. He’s got all the tools for success in WWE. Breakker is a freak, and his torpedo spears are insane.
- I can see them building The Street Profits and Rollins vs. The Vision at Clash in Italy, especially if Dawkins and Ford don’t win the tag team titles at Saturday Night Main Event. I also have another idea, and I’m so intrigued at the possibility of Ford turning heel and joining The Vision. The thought of Ford under the mentorship of Paul Heyman is money!
Final thoughts: This was not hyped up as a special episode of Raw, but damn, was it good! WWE hyped up Saturday Night Main Event with the addition of Sol Ruca vs. Becky Lynch and continued to add interest for Clash in Italy!

Chris King: Is Brock Lesnar Truly Retired?
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
Brock Lesnar retired at WWE WrestleMania 42, right? Are we totally sure? Chris King asks…
At WrestleMania 42, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar took off his boots and gloves following his loss to Oba Femi. Lesnar has done it all inside of his twenty-four-year career in professional wrestling. He’s a ten-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he’s one who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania.
While Lesnar was in the ring, he was visibly overwhelmed with emotion and crying while he thanked the fans in his own way. The Beast even threw up an x to signal to Paul Heyman, his longtime friend and advocate, that this was not scripted and was real. There had been rumors that Lesnar and Oba were supposed to have a series of matches before everything went down at Mania.
‘The Career Killer’ Gunther was doing Heyman’s bidding as he faced Seth Rollins for a favor. For a while now since Gunther retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles, the rumor has been Gunther was set to retire Lesnar in his hometown at this year’s SummerSlam event. There’s been no confirmation if Lesnar is truly retired, but on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, we saw Heyman talking with General Manager Nick Aldis. Later that night following Rhodes’ match against the debuting Ricky Saints, Gunther choked out the WWE Champion. Could this be the favor from Heyman?
I know in the world of professional wrestling we live by the mantra of “never say never,” but what if Lesnar is actually retired and this was WWE’s way of shutting down those rumors about Gunther and Lesnar? What if Gunther’s next program is chasing after the WWE title, and where is Randy Orton at in all of these plans? There are so many questions that need to be answered, hopefully soon!
