Today In Pro Wrestling History: April 10th
No Contests, Explosions, Debuts and banger after banger when it comes to Pro Wrestling History!
Unlike yesterday, we at least have a WrestleMania event that happened on today! That may not matter to some but, April has become the WrestleMania month. It just feels weird when its not present. Let’s see what I found:
-
AJPW Champion Carnival: The Destroyer vs Mark Lewin (1973)
While I can’t say it’s the first in any tournament, it obviously was for the Champion Carnival since this is the inaugural year. Destroyer and Lewin actually wrestled to a No Contest in this match. This caused issues since it was Knockout Bracket style. This match decided who was headed to the first ever finals. So the No Contest, resulted in a rematch on the 14th for a definitive finish. Lewin won the rematch and then lost to Baba in the Finals. But a Draw during a Knockout Stage felt like a fun little nugget to me.
-
NJPW Strong Style Symphony: No Rope Explosive Barbed Wire Deathmatch: Atsushi Onita vs Masahiro Chono (1999)
While this kind of match is a joke to most with how it failed in AEW, when done well, this was the pinnacle of cool. Onita walks out lighting a cigarette while getting pelted with trash and Chono rolls up in a black Hummer smoking a cigar. Puro purists hated Onita, Chono was part of a heel stable but took up to defend the company honor. The ring explodes, both men are out, so the match ends in a Double Knock Out. When they finally get back to their feet, Chono places Onita’s jacket back on him as a show of acceptance. This is peak professional wrestling.
-
WCW Monday Nitro (2000)
The desperation panic button episode! Vince Russo and Eric Bischoff return, strip all the champions and declare the “New Blood” era! This episode also is Mike Awesome’s debut in WCW while he was still ECW Champion. Lots of historical buffoonery, but as we’ve established prior, bad history is still history.
-
NJPW Invasion Attack: IWGP Heavyweight Championship: Kazuchika Okada (c) vs Tetsuya Naito (2016)
Stardust Genius reborn and revitalized. Two years removed from being banished to Mexico because the fans rejected him, he comes back LIJ swag, wins the New Japan Cup and vanquishes Okada with the help of BUSHI, EVIL and the masked but soon revealed Seiya Sanada, who debuted to help Naito finally win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. This was the real first chapter of the most popular faction in Japan. And yes, while Bullet Club enticed the global community, L.I.J. ruled Japan. This event also was the debut of Will Ospreay in NJPW losing to Kushida, but Naito was the bigger moment.
-
WrestleMania 37: SmackDown Women’s Championship: Sasha Banks (c) vs Bianca Belair (2021)
When I put her birthday as an event yesterday, did you think I was going to miss Bianca’s first main roster title win? Sasha wasn’t going to be in WWE much longer, so even though this wasn’t intended as a torch passing, it ended up being one hell of a helpful rub. Bianca solidified her status as a top female competitor shortly after this win, and hasn’t looked back. Tremendous match as well, so it’s not just on here because she’s cool, and it’s not just me that thinks that.
A nice mixture of cool, desperate and historic…this is what I like about doing these articles. It’s also kind of neat to see which events line up on the same days or feed well into each other.

WrestleMania is back on the menu boys and girls! Plus something I never expected…
I may be delirious after staying up so late to cover JCW Strangle-mania, but this was an interesting article for me. I found one company I never thought I’d put on here, and a few repeat offenders. Let’s get to the history!
-
WCW Spring Stampede (1998)
The event was more historic than any matches in particular, even though the Raven’s Rules match between Raven and DDP for the US Title was quite good. This is on the list because this event really signaled the split in the nWo. Hulk trying to screw Macho Man in the main event, while Nash decides to attack Sting instead. This event was also still establish Goldberg with his win over Saturn. So for a fleeting moment this was pivotal and got the wheels in motion.
-
WCW Nitro: Cruiserweight Championship: Psicosis vs Rey Misterio Jr (c) vs Juventud Guerrera vs Blitzkrieg (1999)
Hi-key, I just wanted an excuse to put Blitzkrieg on this list. While Psicosis ends up winning the match, Blitzkrieg showed up and showed out. Innovative high spots, Juvi and Psicosis played up their heel dynamic occasionally working together, but this was just another feather in the cap of Blitzkrieg. Really good match, decent psychology and Blitzkrieg is one of the bigger “What Ifs” in pro wrestling history.
-
TNA Lockdown: World Championship: Sting (c) vs Mick Foley (2009)
Regardless of perceived match quality…this was still a history making moment. Between Mick having a camera guy feed him Barbie through one of the camera holes in the Lockdown cage, to Mick getting his only run with the TNA World Championship. At the time Mick still had a lot of good faith from his WWE time, and most fans weren’t upset with Mick’s run because he was still a fan favorite. Personally I also feel the match gets unnecessary hate. It wasn’t good, but it’s not as bad as many make it out to be.
-
TNA iMPACT!: World Championship: AJ Styles (c) vs RVD (2010)
This happened during the TNA vs WWE short lived Monday Night War. RVD won the #1 contender slot earlier in the night after beating Jeff Hardy, and Hogan decided to expedite the title shot from Sacrifice to later that night. To Hogan’s credit, the night did pop one of the better ratings Monday iMPACT! had during the run, even if the optics of a TNA homegrown talent losing to a former WWE was a hard pill for many TNA diehards to tolerate. So historic, but exactly why depends on your perspective.
-
DDT Saitama Slam!: Extreme Championship Iron Man Match: Akito (c) vs Daisuke Sasaki (2015)
Yeah, I’m shocked I put DDT on here too. But for a company and championship that has had goofy stipulations (one title change happened because someone spoke English during a match and it was an “only the referee knows the stipulation” match), as well as other completely inane things. This was…surprisingly normal. A 60 minute Iron Man match, that was wrestled fairly well. Initially went to a Draw, but Akito demanded Sudden Death. Akito did end up winning in Sudden Death, but a 60+ minute Iron Man match for a grab ass title…that’s definitely surprising and memorable for me.
-
WWE WrestleMania 41: CM Punk vs Seth Rollins vs Roman Reigns (2025)
So the short answer on history is the fact that it was CM Punk’s first official WrestleMania main event in his career. One of his biggest gripes, addressed and solved. The build up was great with the Heyman dynamics, the fallout of the Bloodline, and the undercurrent of The Shield and CM Punk being in lockstep in the history of WWE. Really good match, led to a lot of interesting story afterwards, but again, CM Punk get his boyhood wish granted, that’s the main reason it’s here.
Again, I was never anticipating DDT to make one of these lists unless I was drunk and feeling froggy about putting silly clown stuff in an article to pop myself. But when they actually do something that focuses on wrestling, it should be rewarded.

A WWE PPV not named WrestleMania, a Joshi brawl, Moonsaults from Cages…today is pretty loaded!
If you thought Everything, Everywhere, All at Once was random, you certainly have no been keeping up with how I’m doing these articles. Speaking of that, we’ve got a good mix! It’s not a puroresu wonderland today!
-
JWP Tokyo Show: Bull Nakano vs Devil Masami (1993)
If anyone saw the Dump Matsumoto story on Netflix “Queen of the Villains”, you’ll know that Masami was an established brawling heel before Dump and her Atrocious Alliance took AJW by storm. Bull was a key up and coming figure in the Atrocious Alliance, and then most of us learned who she was thanks to WWF and WCW utilizing some joshi in the 90s. This was an amazing match with the story of two brawling heels re-establishing themselves outside of AJW. Bull came out on top, and if you can find it, this is one of those classic Joshi matches everyone should watch. Great work, easy story, and proof about the lasting power of women’s wrestling.
-
WWE Backlash: Intercontinental Championship: Randy Orton (c) vs Cactus Jack (2004)
This was the match that made Randy, the Randy we’ve all come to love and respect. Legend Killer early days, and a Hardcore Match against a historic psychopath. Most of us still remember the image of Orton being tossed away into the thumb tacks and coming up with his back laced in silver. Solid violence, great story impact and the turning point of the silver spoon Evolution brat to become his own person.
-
ROH Tag Wars: Age of the Fall vs Motor City Machine Guns (2008)
While I almost called them Do It For Her (IYKYK), Age of the Fall and the Guns put on a clinic. Fueled by Shelley and Jimmy’s history in Lacey’s Angels, Jimmy was becoming more and more unhinged after Lacey went missing. The crowd was hot since this was in Detroit, and all four guys were big deals in the Super Indie/Mid Major scene. While the guns lost at home, it furthered our favorite Vampire Princess’ spiral and evolving blood feud with Austin Aries.
-
TNA Lockdown: Mr. Anderson vs Kurt Angle (2010)
Easily the show stealer of the event. While Kurt did it a couple times, this Moonsault off the top of the cage has been used in TNA reels for as long as possible. Fantastic intensity, a palpable rivalry and Kurt winning after being goaded for months and during the match. The event itself was also lame history because it was the first event with a Four Sided Cage, which makes sense because this was Hogan-Bischoff era, and they never understood the six sides. But hey, this match is definitely a TNA classic.
-
CMLL Super Viernes: 2 out of 3 Falls: Blue Panther, Neon & Mascara Dorada vs Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero & Stuka Jr (2025)
I think this is the first time CMLL has shown up, and historic if for no other reason than Super Viernes has been an event since 1930, so almost 100 years straight of an event is how you build consistency. This match was somewhat simple, Blue Panther and Ultimo Guerrero had a legend vs legend feud going, Panther’s allies were the up and coming babyfaces while Ultimo had his own gatekeeper squad. As one would expect, the Babyfaces went over in the match, but the rivalry storyline existed through all of 2025, and even mixing promotions when Blue Panther defeated Ultimo for the MLW National Championship later in the year. Good old fashioned hatred.
We get fancy, we get creative and we get everyone a little shine. Wrestling is far bigger than any bubble Twitter wants you to choose a tribe for, so why not sample a little bit from everywhere and see if anything new fits your tastes?
